UK train services to be increased from Monday as travel restrictions are eased

The UK’s train network is expected to increase capacity from today as lockdown restrictions are eased across England.

Train companies will be increasing their service capacity by up to 70% in response to the relaxation of the restrictions as the UK moves towards unlocking the economy.

With restrictions set to be in place for many businesses until June, the UK is taking a cautious approach to restarting the economy despite the new relaxation for train journeys.

While train services will be increasing from Monday, the number of passengers able to travel will be severely reduced, with only 1 in 10 commuters able to utilise trains across England due to social distancing.

The measures to increase the number of train services will enable more passenger traffic however commuters will need to adapt to the stricter rules on distancing. The difficulty will be for workers in the rush hours between 7am and 10am, in particular those commuting into London.

With more services being made available to compensate, seats may be blocked off with passengers being asked to maintain 2-metres distance when boarding trains and waiting at station platforms.

New advice from the government now allows people to go to work if they are unable to work from home, however a majority of people should stay at home where possible.
