The government has announced today a new competition as part of its industrial strategy to revolutionise aviation in the UK.

As of today, businesses can apply for funding for projects between £150,000 and £10 million as part of the drive to develop new integrated aviation systems.

As aviation goes through a transformation over the coming years, businesses will play a crucial role in developing the technology and the systems to support new types of aircraft. These include drones, electronic planes and flying taxis among other autonomous aircraft.

With the rise in drone use and small electric aircraft, new ways of transforming systems and technologies need to be discovered. This includes upgrading airports and designing technology that can make the UK a world leader in aviation technology.

The funds will be made available through Innovate UK, which has set aside £30 million initially for businesses to develop projects and demonstrate that they can produce integrated aviations systems.

Some of the criteria that businesses need to follow with their project proposals include air traffic management, transport integration and autonomy among others.

Applications will be accepted now until 1st July in two strands, with businesses able to pitch smaller and larger projects.
