The UK’s digital connectivity has surged in 2019 to above 28 million properties in latest figures released today by Ofcom.

In total, the proportion of UK properties now being able to access broadband with stable, superfast connections has reached 95% of the country.

Rates for ultrafast broadband also increased from 53% to 54% of premises with speeds over 300Mbit/s.

This comes as an additional 1.1 million properties over the last year have been connected to full-fibre broadband bringing a boost to the digital economy, and providing rural areas with additional connectivity.

Figures from Tech Nation’s 2018 report on the digital economy show that the digital tech sector, which creates thousands of new jobs each year, grew 2.6% faster than the rest of the economy. The digital tech sector last year was estimated to be worth nearly £184 billion to the economy overall.

As London among other cities and towns in the UK seek to capitalise on the strength of the digital sector, connectivity and faster broadband have been vital in helping the UK grow economic activity in many sectors including ecommerce, fintech, and professional services.

The latest news comes as the UK prepares to roll out 5g across mobile networks with internet speeds for mobile users set to increase by a factor of 10x or more.
